Groundwater Age and Groundwater Age Dating

چکیده

A new way of thinking about groundwater age is changing the field of groundwater age dating. Following a rigorous definition of age, a groundwater sample is seen not as water that recharged the flow regime at a point in the past, but as a mixture of waters that have resided in the subsurface for varying lengths of time. This recognition resolves longstanding inconsistencies encountered in age dating and suggests new ways to carry out age dating studies. Tomorrow’s studies will likely employ sets of marker isotopes and molecules spanning a broad spectrum of age and incorporate a wide range of chemical and physical data collected from differing stratigraphic levels. The observations will be inverted using reactive transport modeling, allowing flow to be characterized not in one direction along a single aquifer, but in two or three dimensions over an entire flow regime. 121 A nn u. Groundwater transit time distribution and mean fromstreambed sampling in an agricultural coastal plain watershed, North Carolina, USA

We measured groundwater apparent age (s) and seepage rate (v) in a sandy streambed using point-scale sampling and seepage blankets (a novel seepage meter). We found very similar MTT estimates from streambed point sampling in a 58 m reach (29 years) and a 2.5 km reach (31 years). The TTD for groundwater discharging to the stream was best fit by a gamma distribution model and was very similar for...

Every drop tells a story: a new technique for dating water.

important to know the age so you can assess the susceptibility of drinking water supplies to surface contamination. If you know that the groundwater in a particular area fell 10 years ago as surface rainfall, you can then decide how long it will take a surface contamination to reach the water supply. " Plummer says that information on groundwater age, or the average time since the molecules wer...

Noble gas isotopes (He, He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe), tritium (H), chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and dissolved oxygen (O2) were seasonally measured in a small groundwater system recharged by infiltration of river water at Linsental, northeastern Switzerland. All Groundwater samples contained an excess of atmospheric noble gases (‘excess air’) usually with an elemental composition equal to air. The concentr...

Demonstrating trend reversal of groundwater quality in relation to time of recharge determined by 3H/3He.

Recent EU legislation is directed to reverse the upward trends in the concentrations of agricultural pollutants in groundwater. However, uncertainty of the groundwater travel time towards the screens of the groundwater quality monitoring networks complicates the demonstration of trend reversal. We investigated whether trend reversal can be demonstrated by relating concentrations of pollutants i...

Educational Webtool Illustrating Groundwater Age Effects on Contaminant Trends in Wells

Trends in concentrations of nonpoint-source contaminants in wells, springs, and streams are related to the history of contamination in groundwater recharge and the age distribution in the groundwater discharge. The age distribution in discharge depends on the groundwater age distribution in the aquifer and the subset of flowpaths that are sampled by the discharge. Groundwater travel times from ...
